intercultural comms = succesfull comms between people with different backgrounds

Byram’s model:

skills:

leads to => critical cultural awareness = look at things from the perspectives of different cultures

Deardorff’s model:

  1. knowledge: cultural self-awareness
  2. internal outcome: frame-of-ref shift, aka ability to change perspective
  3. external outcome: more effective and appropriate comms & behaviour in the intercultural situation
  4. attitudes: respect, openness, curiosity, discovery (valuing other cultured, witholding judgement, tolerating ambiguity)

mediation = translation of perspective to the perspective of the other, keeping both in mind.

self-awareness of socialcultural and sociolinguistic behaviours

engage => create positive, neutral, trusted, shared “space”/environment

analyse “rich points”: differences/difficulties (in comms) from constrasting viewpoints, comms styles, attitudes or behaviours.
