affordances -> enrich lang ed
collaborative (language) learning -> learn language by interaction w peers or native speakers -> joint effort: work together on the same task -> working on a ‘final result’ -> “prosumers” (both producer and consumer of that product)
collaboration/interaction via computers (‘computer-mediated comms’ or CMC) can be:
- synchronous (at the same time), like voice/video calls, text chat
- asynchronous (at different times), like e-mails and blog posts
tasks should include:
- clear goals
- guidelines
- planning
game based language teaching/learning
examples:
- serious educational games: put question or problem into a virtual playing field.
- gamification: incorporate game mechanics/elements (time pressure, points, levels, risk, rewards, missions, role-play, leaderboards) into learning materials (in the existing non-gaming context).
- playful interaction: …?
games provide:
- safe space for practise and failure (no consequences, trial-and-error is allowed)
- playful and competitive way to learn
out-of-class learning (outside the school, less formal)
- new possibilities
-
more engagement

- immediate access to info
- social networks/graphs
- situation-relevant help
- flexible in time and space
- continuity between settings
digital literacy = the individual, technological, social skills needed to effectively interpret, manage, share, and creating meaning with use of digital comms channels.
it is important because our society is becoming increasingly digitalized, and it is therefore useful to be able to use and interpret these digital media in your every day life.
answer: essential for full participation in society + enrich learning inside classroom.
take away:
- Digital is here to stay and we have to adapt to the new paradigm
- Digital is not and end to themselves. Have to incorporate in didactic/pedagogical practice.
- Digitally competent is done by training, self-study and use
- Digitally competent does not mean using/mastering newest tech, it means knowing their didactic value and when to apply them.
- Use of digital media can be motivating, if supporting students’ interests, needs and goals. (and should also align with way we use in every day life)
