flipped learning & self-regulated learning
flipping should:
-
reduce cognitive overload (because you are more in control over pace etc.)
-
enhance motivation: from self-determination theory. (increase of autonomy bc more control; competence bc better prepared for tut session; relatedness bc less lecture time & more active learning -> more interaction)
self regulating =
- monitoring+adjust own learning (using cogntv + metacogntv strats)
- regulate motivation (to do the monitoring)
plan&goals -> stategies&monitoring -> reflect&adapt (cyclse of self-reg learner)
important, because more autonomy in blended env -> requires more self-regulation
srl is important life skill (directly causes higher achievement)
srl is difficult and slow to develop by:
- doing tasks requiring it
- receiving specific explain/support/training
especially difficult for young people (from adolescence more complex srl is possible)
home and school env impacts development of srl
how support/measure?
- goal setting
- time management
- environment structuring (aka where put smartphone etc.)
- help seeking (when stuck, do u know? and do you ask for help?)
- task definition (do you know what to do?)
- strategic planning (before) -> strategies etc.
- strategic planning (after) -> do you make changes?
in flipped environment?
- provide explicit srl instruction (increases srl quality) (ie. explain strategies)
- facilitate srl by prompting (increases quantity)
- regular reflection moments
- goal setting and planning
- progress monitoring (by students and/or teachers)
promts examples:
- which strats you gonna use?
- explain in own words the concept of …
- reflect on approach. effective? changes?
research: srl prompts on their own did not impact performance
- students did not see their meaning/relevance
adding explicit instruction -> increase in learning
conclusion:
- students need srl to fully benefit from flipped/blended env
- consider/support srl when designing
- blended learning can develop srl due to a need to apply (but takes time)
blended learning -> autonomy -> more oppurtunity to develop skills
